Kandahar Woodcarving  Page

Thanks for visiting

I would like to say first this page is dedicated to all the woodcarvers out there. So there will not be any political comments made by me with ref to the military and or the Canadian Forces deployment.  I will make comments with ref to carving wood, Stone, wood & stone types in country, tools used and anything related to carving or woodworking in general.

I will be updating this from in country so it will take some time. Be patient there will be odd days I am away on missions and not able to update the page.

The photos below are of my last Totem Poles that I carved in 2004 during my first deployment to Afghanistan. One of them now stands in Kabul the other one is lost in country. After I left the first time the pole was removed and erected in some other unknown location. With luck some day the one that's lost will turn up.

Tribute to Canadian Soldiers (Video)

Act Of Remembrance
They shall grow not old, As we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn [sic].
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them,

"We will remember them"

LOST IN COUNTRY, not sure where it ended up

In Kabul

I started to carve my third Totem Pole in Kandahar in May 07 and should be complete in late July depending on the temperature in KAF. The design is one of my basic designs with the Eagle at the top to represent how we traveled to Kandahar which was by air. Next in line is the North American Native, which represents our spirit and where we come from. Then comes the Viking with his hair blowing in the 120 day winds of the red desert. This represents the multinational environment in which we live and work. And last on the pole is the Gypsy which is dedicated to my Dutch comrades.

The start of a new Totem Pole

In the beginning,  "Carving at night"

When I carve the wings I use a Mortis and tendon joint. So because I have no way  to secure the carving I've left the complete set of wings and Viking horns on the wood. I simply carve out one side complete then cut it all out then complete the last small amount by hand.
